Trotting Double Next Saturday
SOME KEEN CONTESTS PRINCE OF WALES AND CORNWALL (By ABAYDOS) The defection of Silk Thread from the principal event on th. Auckland Trotting Club's opening day of the united fixture was a body blow to early backers, who had made the American-br*d pacer a warm favourite on the appearance of the Handicaps. Of the Kt horses originally handi capped by Mr. Paul, ten have *tn„a their ground, the withdrawals being TJalm ?nv. Thread, and Odd Jar' ket. Dulmrny and Gold Jacket have had their mile engagements continued but it is quite evident that Silk Thread will not be at the meeting. Those who make an early selection received a shock when it was found that trainer Plaxico was not starting the Bingen Silk horse in the Prince of Wales Handicap, as he was the most sought after candidate on the publication of the adjustments. Classy Field Despite the three defections, there is a handy field billed to contest the big heat, and the ton left In will provide the public with an interesting and spectacular race. Half the runners are on the end. and in the light of recent events Dundas Boy will have a large following. But Mr. G. McMillan’s speed merchant does best on top of the ground, and it looks very mucli as if the footing will be holding on Saturday. After his track essays during the last few days. Torpedo
Huon has come into favour, and. while the Australian pacer may be in need of a race, he is sure to show a bold front. The Abbey is also shaping in good style, and. provided he leaves correctly, must have something to say in the settlement of the argument. Vesuvius is striking farm, and wili add interest to the contest, while Young Blake, good trotter as he is, will probably find it difficult to go with the pacers over the earlier stage. The Rear Division Logan Chief would want to be at his very best to have a chance on the next line, and the same applies to Machine Gun, whose form this season has not been up to his usual standard. Padlock is another that has not given of his best this season, but if dressed in his best would take a power of beating off the 4.27 mark. On the same line is Cardinal Logan, who is signalling a return to his best form,
and will be quite at home on Alexandra Park under winter conditions. The back-marker. Kohara, may be short of a race, but if he can reproduce his Christmas displays it will take the others all their time to keep ouc of his road. At this stage, Dundas Boy, Torpedo Huon, Cardinal Logan and Kohara will appeal to pre-post speculators. The Second Leg The response from owners in th-e Cornwall mile dash is decidedly good, and a compliment to the handicapper’s work, which is of such a nature as to make the task of picking the second leg extremely difficult. Harvest Child and Tony Victor, two that were well fancied when the adjustment saw the light of day, are still among the acceptors, and off the front this pair is sure to be in good demand. Harvest Child is a solid customer ov*r every distance, but he appears to be one that does better after a race or two. Tony Victor begins brilliantly, and this will be a fine advantage ’n such a heat. Wharepiana on her day is a smart pacer, while Steel All may be better than his New Zealand essays indicate. Daytime is a genuine sort, and sure to make things interesting. Of those in the next division, old All Bell will be very cheeky, and as Geo. Baton has him looking brand new again, he may upset the pot. Nelson Tasker is a dashing customer over
this journey, while Dalmeny can go a merry mile when tuned up, ana 3 s ho is left in this heat in preference to the big go, must be seriously considered. Dundas Boy, Cardinal Logan. Native Prince, ajid Gold Jacket are a speedy quartet on the 5.10 peg, ana they are sure to be knocking when comes to the finish. As several in this event are engaged in the Prince of Wales Handicap, backers on the da> will have a good line on their form, but these will meet with strenuous opposition from those who are blDea only to appear in the sprint. selectors will at this stage probably favour the prospects of Harvest CHil » Tony Victor, Dalmeny and All BelE
