WELLINGTON’S NEW CARILLON CHIMES REACH NEW ZEALAND The bells of Wellington's new war memorial carillon, which were recent:;, cast in England, were beard for the first time in New Zealand shortly afte: eight o’clock this morning, when a Devonport listener-in picked up* short-wave broadcast from the Brit:?.’ Broadcasting Company’s experiment, station, SSW. , . The carillon is at present housed in the British Industries Exhibition Newcastle-on-Tyne, it having been lent to the exhibition for sbe months before being brought out to New Zealand. From Newcastle the chimeswen relayed by land-line to the Chclmsior. station and there broadcast on short wavelength. , The listener-in reports that severs popular hymn tunes were played ana that the music of the chimes *as wonderfully clear. Several announc - ments were also made, which werenso clear, although most of them quite understandable.
