SAVIDAN AGAIN
WINS TWO-MILE STEEPLE SPRINT TO BARKER A smart run over the two-mile course, saw J. W. Savidan. longdistance, and cross-country champion of New Zealand, romp in an easy winner at the steeplechase held by the Auckland Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club at the Domain on Saturday afternoon. There were 16. competitors in the big event, and Savidan, the back-marker, was conceding 140 sec to the limit man. E. M. Horan. The latter led for the first round or so. but could not last at the pace. The last lap saw the field very close together, and by this time. Savidan had overhauled Cooper, and was well into the fray. He took the lead about 400yds from home, and passed the tape about 20yds ahead of Clapham, who. in turn, was followed by Clarke away, third. The 73yd sprint was clinched by L. C. Barker, in 7 3-ssec\ who had carried off his heat in the same time. Montgomery showed up well by flashing in to win the second heat in good time, but in the final be got behind the field, and could not flash through in the final dash up to the tape. Barker, the winner of the sprint, and Savidan. the steeplechase winner, both received small silver cups from Mr. W. Morton, president of the Auckland Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club, and also of the Auckland centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association. Following are the results: 75 YARDS HANDICAP First Heat.—J,. C- Barker <9*yds), 1; A. Clarke (14yds), -; R. G. Kirkwood (7i yds), 3. Seven started. Won by inches. Time, 7 4-5. Second Heat.—T. Montgomery (Ttyds), 1. C. Torbett (Slyds) 2; J. W. Savidan (Syds), 3. Bight started. Won easily by two yards. Time, 7 3-ssec. j L. C. Barker (91yds) 1 C. Torbett (Styds) 2 j R. G.
