PAUL’S ADVICE
STRIVING FOR MASTERIES WHERE THE WORLD GOES WRONG Speaking at Birkenhead Presbyterian Church last evening, Mr. Reuben *E. Dowle took for his text Timothy “And if also a man contend in the games he is not crowned except he have contended lawfully.” St. Paul, in writing to young Timothy, emphasised the principle overcoming the difficulties of life in a befitting manner, said the preacher. “The natural desire for advancement is inherent in human nature. The desire for improvement is a strong characteristic in those who excel. Every person strives for masteries, but, unfortunately, too many do not stri\*e lawfully. Paul wished to safeguard Timothy from this error. “This Scriptural teaching is required now, perhaps, more than ever. Faith in God helps men and women to overcome, lawfully, life’s difficulties. Politicians, statesmen, and diplomats are shouting from the housetops. ‘l’ve found it.’ They do very little good, and probably much harm. They are not striving lawfully. “There are others who are continually advocating the teachings of doubtful science. Science has accomplished wonderful things for the world, but pseudo science is fast becoming a curse to mankind. True science we all welcome, but even that cannot substitute the teaching of ’The Light of the World.’
“Again some are advocating the infallibility of human reason. They are too often blind leaders of the blind. ‘Prove all things and hold fast that which is good’ is wholesome apostolic advice.
“Then, there are others who teach the socialisation of society. They spare no pains to gain their objective, but too regularly we find that such teachings are disastrous and unlawful. “Many others are looking in every direction for panaceas, except the right direction. They are striving unlawfully because they are slaves to fallacies to bolster up their sin-stricken lives. The world today needs. therefore, a moral and religious reformation, rather than an economic one,” said Mr. Dowle.
