Napier Park Proves Bad for Favourites

SERIES OF MISHAPS SINGLETON’S FINE WIN ( Special to THE SUN) NAPIER. Saturday. The Napier Park winter meeting was concluded today in fine weather and before a good attendance. The totalisator handled £10.065 for the day, making £lß.lOl for the meeting-, compared with £S.ISI for the one-day meeting last year. In the Steeplechase, the favourite got mixed up with the wing of the last fence, and, peculiarly enough, a similar mishap befel the favourite in the Open Hurdles. Waiohiki Hurdles Wilmoreana made the early running in the Waiohiki Handicap. He had a life opposite the stand. Half a mile from home Fine Acre ran into the lead, and, fencing well all the way, eventually won nicely by a length from Thurnbell. who finished fast, and cut Abisogne out of second place. Wilmoreana was four tit. Greenmeadows Hack Trisogne and Atapai were early in front in the Greenmeadows Handicap, but both failed. Taranto led into the straight, where Glyn Dhu came fast and won by a head from Last Mark, with Mangahere a close third and Taranto fourth. Ladies’ Handicap Curtsey, King’s Jest and Brigadier Bill were all well backed in the Ladies’ Handicap, which turned out to be a good thing for King’s Jest, who won very easily from Alaric by four lengths, with Curtsey about a length, back, third, and Brigadier Bill, Merle, Acred and Mandarine next. Winter Oats Vesperus and Queen's Choice led across the top in the Winter Oats and Queen’s Choice was in front half-way down the straight, where Singleton camo to light and won easily from Queen's Choice who. ridden out, just beat Royal Damon and Shrewd. Courageous was next. Park Steeplechase Only four contested the Park Steeplechase. Grishna led to the last fence, where he hit one wing, and Royal Elm beat him home by half a length. Master Arch was a poor third. Awangawanga did not finish. PORAITE HURDLES In a four-horse race in the Poraite Hurdles Novar and Atareria were evenly backed, with a drop to Peslivva. The last-named was in charge l'or most of the journey from Atareria, Novar and Perle de Leon. There was little between them approaching the

final obstacle, where Novar suddenly swerved and ran of*. Peshwa was first over, but he was tiring, and Atareria had little difficulty in beating him home by five lengths. de Leon being another four lengths away. NEWSTEAD HACK HANDICAP The favourite won the last race, which is just as it should be. This was Malahat, and he was chased home by the second and fourth fancies, so it was good picking. Shortly attempted to win all the way. but the. favourite was always handy, to come through at the distance to win very easily by three lengths. Shortly hung on to get second money, a length ahead of Vinella. Merry Maston was never in the picture in the early stages, but came with a rattle into fourth place.
