COUNCIL’S SELECTION FROM ART SHOW
OitS AND DRAWING CHOSEN
The Auckland City Council has (rtade three selections from the annual exhibition of the Auckland Society of Arts for hanging in the city Art Gallery. Two oil paintings and one drawing have been chosen.
Tbe oils include “Three Score and Ten." a self-portrait by the Dunedin artist, A. H. O'Keeffe. It is a vigorous Study, the strongest piece of portrait wort in the show. The other, "The Marne Valley,” by Khona Haszard, a Christchurch artist, living in France, is an unusual landscape. Using original technical Methods, she has achieved interesting tlfects, but it is not a picture likely to make great public appeal. The drawing, a sepia sketch of a male figure, has been chosen from ,be Elam School of Art section of the -hoW. The artist is Hildegarde Dixon, v;ho is now a student at the Royal College of Art, London. The O'Keeffe portrait cost £25. the bndscape £2l, and the drawing £3
The art union prize-winners have now made their purchases, the following pictures being chosen: “Zinnias,” £lO 10s; “The Old Cottage, Ellerslie,” £6 10s; and “Post Office, Nihotupu,” £5 ss, by Ivy M. Copeland; “Glimpse of the Sea,” by Klla Spicer, £4 4s; “Kangaroo Valley,’ by Minnie F. White,’ £7 7s; "Roses,” by Mabel Hill, £lO 10s; -Street in Assisi.” by Cranleigh Barton, £lO 10s; “Corfe, Dorset,’ by C. Hav Campbell, £8 8s; "Old Farmhouse. Panmure,” by Hilda Wiseman, “6 6s: "Essence of Sunshine,” by B. Jackson, £5 ss. With the first prize, “Idyll,” by Cedric Savage, which cost £42, this lirings the total sales of the show to £3OB.
