GLOOMY SITUATION

COAL-OWNERS REJECT MEN’S OFFER NEW SOUTH WALES DEADLOCK SYDNEY, Thursday. The coalmining situation is more gloomy this evening. It is reported that the owners have rejected the fresh proposals of the miners. It is stated in reliable quarters also that the executive of the Enginedrivers and Firemen’s Union has sent an ultimatum to the miners’ representatives. In this they demand the withdrawal of massed pickets from the northern collieries, and that the picket leaders be disciplined. Failing this, the enginedrivers say they will withdraw the saefty men at the end of the week. It is understood that the basis of the miners’ offer was that they were prepared to return to work immediately at reduced wages, providing that the owners guaranteed to refund the reductions if their figures as to the costs of carrying on the industry were proved to be wrong.
