MOON RAINBOW (Written for THE SUN) The ship drives onward through the nighty A thing of darkness Save ivhere her lights, like eyes, Show her a thing alive — A. demon scudding On unknown errand Over the liquid sea Of ink and mercury, Mixed by the moon in midnight alchemy. And overhead the moon swings clear Of drifting smoke-trail, Sioings on, now caught in spars , Now dipping with the stars — Swings on for ever , And for ever pours Into the inky sea, Ghostly , elusively, A flood thro ’ which each wave gleams icily But on the further side, subdued By hanging rain-veils, Where stars are blinded dim From the darkened sea's rim , Huge and unearthly, A. moonbow ghostly Rears its white arch, softly brushing the sea. Born of the moon, paler than dawn, Wraith of the sea-mist — Through its gigantic span. Wider than bridge of man Flows the sea under. 1 watch till it fades, Dissolved in the rain-cloud Wind comes up swift and loud; Darkness wraps moonbow and moon in one shroud. . , MONA GORDON.
