FARMLETS FOR THE UNEMPLOYED

Sir, — Your correspondent “Manurewa” has ignored my invitation to provide details showing how small holders on 10 acres of land in his district are to make a living. It is easy to talk about settling the unemployed problem by providing them, presumably at the expense of the State, .with farmlets, which cannot cost much less than £1,500 each, but it is not very helpful. The areas are too small for dairying, and if the small holder goes in for market gardening he is up against the competition of Chinese and cannot hope to beat them at the game. Fruit-growing and poultryraising are already overdone, and they require a great deal more experience and knowledge than the average out-of-work usually possesses. If “Manarewa” can carry the argument any further, it would he interesting to near from him. CURIOUS.
