JURY DISAGREES
MAORI CHARGED WITH HORSE-STEALING ACQUITTAL ON OTHER CHARGE (From Our Oxen Correspondent) HAMILTON, Wednesday. The case in which the Maori, Wharematangi, was charged in the Supreme Court before Mr. Justice Herdman with stealing a horse valued at £lO. the property of the Taringamotu Totara Timber Company, concluded this afternoon, when the jury failed to agree and a new trial was ordered. Sergeant O’Brien xjroduced a statement in which prisoner said he had owned the horse he sold to Ford all its life. Mr. Strang called several Maori witnesses for the defence. Evidence was given by them that they had se<m the horse which accused said he had sold Ford in accused’s possession some years ago.
The accused was also charged with stealing two working bullocks, the property of a Maori woman living near Taumarunui. The jury acquitted him without leaving the box.
