STRAIN ON LOCAL BODIES PROTEST FROM TAKAPUNA “There is a limit to the ability of small local bodies grappling with the big and growing problem of unemployment,” said Cr. J. Guiniven, during a discussion on unemployment relief works at last evening’s meeting of the Takapuna Borough Council. The discussion arose during the consideration of unemployment relief work in the borough. Cr. Guiniven suggested that an unemployment insurance scheme should be instituted and, on his motion, the council decided to urge the Government to give consideration to the establishment of such a scheme.

The assistant-engineer reported that 9S men were employed on the footpaths loan work, started as a means of relieving unemployment. The statutory resolutions necessary for the raising of a £4,000 relief loan were passed
