BIG HOPES OF LABOUR IN THE LEAGUE DISARMAMENT THE GOAL (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) Reed. 9.5 a.m. LONDON, Tuesday. There are already indications that the League Assembly at Geneva on September 9 will be of absorbing interest. The mere fact that Mr. Ramsay MacDonald is going in addition to Mr. Arthur Henderson, the Foreign Secretary, whose chief platform is world pacification, indicates that disarmament is going to be the big subject. A well-informed official told the Australian and New Zealand Press Association that Britain is going to make a strong effort to extricate the subject from the realm of an academic discussion and get something practical done. In this Mr. MacDonald will have the strong support of the smaller States, which last year vainly tried to have a definite date fixed for a world disarmament conference. The Australian and New Zealand Press Association notes an undercurrent of German anticipation that things are going to he accelerated, likewise some anxiety in France that the Assembly may mistakenly take the bit in its teeth. Profound interest will attach to the policy of the British Empire bloc, especially in the light of the protocol blunders which were narrowly averted in 1924.
