KING COUNTRY NEWS

At the first statutory meeting of the new Kaitieke County Council, Cr. T. H. Crocker was elected chairman, a position he is now filling for the ninth year. Returning thanks for his re-elec-tion, Mr. Crocker stated that ail the county riding accounts were now in credit, and matters were going smoothly all through.

Cr. W. j. Hartley, the new representative for the Owhango Riding, made a personal explanation. He said it had been remarked by at least one elector prior to the election, “If you put Hartley in he will be all for Kakahi.” Cr. Hartley claimed the right to give this an emphatic denial, and said he had the interests of the whole county at heart. The side roads in his riding were in a disgraceful state, and he asked that when the grader was again in the riding these would be put in order. The council agreed to this, and to the repairing of the Pukehou Bridge at Kakahi.

A movement is afoot to re-form a Literary and Debating Society in Taumarunui. and a public meeting convened for that purpose Mr. A. E. Tomlinson was given authority to test the feeling of possible supporters, and to call another meeting to deal with the matter.

On the ground that it was responsible for arrangements made by the Auckland Acclimatisation Society with the Minister of Internal Affairs for the thinning out of quail on a property in the Punga Punga district, the Taumarunui Rod and Gun Club passed a resolution proposed by Mr. J. A. Arthur that the club was unable to accept any responsibility in the direction noted. It was decided to seek permission from the Railway Department to tap a pipelead from the railway reservoir for water to supply the holding-ponds should an emergency necessity arise.

Racing over a 16-mile in the weekly event arranged by the Taumarunui Cycle Club, V. S. Moore, scr, registered first with the good time of 40min 25sec, D. Dowman, scr. was second, with J. Carmody, 90sec. third.
