Canterbury Entrants For Auckland Trots
HORSES IN FORM TOMKINSON’S BIG TEAM (Special to THE SLA) CHRISTCHURCH. Monday. As usual there will be a large quota of Canterbury horses present at Epsom this month, and as a great number of those engaged has been racing prominently at the several recent meetings in the South, they should make their presence felt at the forthcoming fixture. The Auckland Trotting Club's winter meeting is always popular with Southern sportsmen, and once again the response is liberal. In the list of nominations there are no less than thirty-two horses representing nineteen stables. W. J. Tomkinson is the chief contributor with Young Blake. Maiwhariti, Dalmeny, Ethiopian, Western Voyage and White Sun. while other trainers and horses are:—V. Alborn. Vesuvius, Linkman and Cannonball: J. Bryce, TumataKuru and Evelyn Locanda; W. T. Lowe, Trampfast and Commander Bingen; R. B. Berry, Bingen Starr and Dundas Boy; C. Donald. Lindbergh and Bessie Logan; R. Plaxico, Great Bingen and Silk Thread; D. Warren, Wrackler and Wrackeen; J.. J. Kennerley, Vendome; A. Hendriksen, Cardinal Logan; D. Withers, Steel All: C. E. Lindsay, Harvest Child; J. Washington, Daphne de Oro; F. Holmes, Logan Chief; J. Henderson, Brentloc; M. B. Edwards, Wharepiana; W. Barton. Dipnoi; J. A. Milligan, Peter Lin; F. O. Holmes, Muriel de Oro.
A Strong Hand TV. J. Tomkinson, who is the leading trainer this season, has a useful team. The trotters Western Voyage and Young Blake are in great lettle, and should pay their way. Ethiopian has raced well in his last four starts, and still has something in reserve. White Sun is solid, but does not stay, while Dalmeny is well known to the Auckland public, as one that is partial to heavy going. The ex-West Coaster, V. Alborn, will make his presence felt with Vesuvius and Linkman, as both pacers are at the top of their form. Cannonball is showing a lot of speed in his work, but is not staying too well. However, he is bright and healthy, and in a slow run race is entitled to respect.
In Good Shape J. Bryce’s pair, Evelyn Locanda and Tumatakuru, have both won races this season. They are in first-class racing condition, and should add interest to the fixture. W. T. Lowe has Trampast and Commander Bingen freely engaged. Both trotters raced at Ashburton on Saturday, but owing to the improvement in the times of their respective races, they were never prominent. Dundas Boy, who has been a good stake winner of late, will be R. B. Berry’s candidate in the big races. The Brent Locanda gelding is very fit, and a portion of the stakes should come his way. Since Bingen Starr joined the Southern mentor’s string he has become more solid. He is a speedy trotter, but requires a firm track to be seen at his best. A Classy Three-year-old C. Donald is likely to take Lindbergh and Bessie Logan North. The former is a high-class three-year-old, and it will not be long before he is found racing in first-class company. At Ashburton the son of Author Dillon was well backed in the winter Handicap of JO furlongs. He began slowly but once into his stride he showed a rare turn of speed, and over the last mile was timed to do better than 2.10. Bessie Logan has no recent form to recommend her, but she is a useful marc when right, and to find her race well would occasion no surprise. Likely Cup Candidates Silk Thread and Great Bingen will carry Mr. J. R. McKenzie’s colours. The first-named has greatly improved since R. Plaxico took charge of Mr. McKenzie’s team, and is spoken of as a likely horse to qualify for the big November handicap. The champion, Great Bingen, is pleasing his trainer, but it is doubtful whether the son of Nelson Bingen and Bertha Bell has done enough fast work for him to be seen at his best. D. Warren’s three-year-old Wrackler and Wrackeen were seen in action at Ashburton. The former registered a smart performance when he finished second to Lingfield in the principal two-mile race, but the display of Wrackeen was not impressive. Showing Return to Form •T. J. Kennerley and A. Hendriksen will rely upon Vendome and Cardinal Logan respectively. Vendome won at Forbury Park, while Cardinal Logan showed up sufficiently well on the concluding day of Canterbury Park to suggest that his turn is not far off. D. Withers, who recently get up as a private trainer, and has a large team in work, will assist with Steel All. The Australian-bred pacer has three unplaced performances to his credit since he came to the Dominion; but, even so. he looks a useful sort. Harvest Child (C. E. Lindsay) scored most decisively at Forbury Park. The North Canterbury-owned gelding can sprint and stay and is expected to race prominently. Daphne de Oro is a long time striking form. She is receiving every attention ifrom the hands of her ownertrainer, J. Washington, and may race better than of late. Logan Chief (F. Holmes) has been racing very consistently during the past few weeks. He still retains his speed and condition and is carrying himself as well as ever. A Solid Sprinter Brentloc will contest the spring events. There is no doubt about his speed and, over short courses, he is entitled to respect. Neither Wharepiana nor Muriel de Oro has shown much promise of late. The last-named was backed in the Acton Handicap at Ashburton, but did not finish in a place. On this occasion she was at the back of the field, and may race better off the front. Peter Lin registered two seconds on the concluding day of Canterbury Park. On each occasion he showed a rare turn of speed, but failed to control it. Dipnoi is a useful trotter, but the company he is now engaged in is much more select than hitherto consequently his task looks hard.
