BIRKENHEAD SCHOOL
MEETING OF COMMITTEE The Birkenhead School Committee held its monthly meeting last eveniig. Mr. J. Macdonald, chairman, presided. Mr. A. G. Menzies, headmaster, reports that the roll shows an increase of four, while the average is 315. a drop of five on the average of last month. In asking the committee for assistance in trying to secure additional scholars for the school in order that the average attendance may be raised to prevent any reduction in staff, the report stated that for the second term of the sch >ol year just ended, the average was l-e----low the number required for the present staffing and the average for the present year is two below that requir'd. During the final term the school must make up that leeway and keep the average above 321 to retain the present staff. It was decided to allow the headmaster to circularise the homes to try to get any children above fve years old to attend the school. The school was successful in w lining three prizes at the recent Han ilton Show, the successful pupils ben? Mary Gilbertson and William Claphim for mapping, and Ronald Davies or writing. The committee’s congratulations are to be conveyed to these pupils. It was decided to apply to the Nor hcote Junior High School for a donat on toward a dental clinic for the combined districts. It was suggested that the donation should come out of a bend fund collected years ago in the < istrict. This fund has never been uied. but is held in trust. The money at that time was collected to start a b« n<l in the school at Northcote, but the project fell hrough.
