HIGH COMMISSIONER’S REPORT

The Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram, dated June 8. from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London:

Tallow. —No auction this week. Market very quiet with easier tendency, but no quotable change in prices.

Fruit. —Market quiet during last few days and prices little lower. S.S. Westmoreland apples landed in a fair condition, but pears variable. Considerable waste in Comice and Winter Cole pears. Prices-: —Apples: Statesman and Cleopatra, 13s to 16s a case; Dunn’s Favourite, 12s to 14s Gd: Delicious, Rome Beauty, King David and Premier, 11s to 14s; Jonathan, 11s to 14s, ur> to 15s. Pears (sound f.ruit)Comice, 10s to 15s a single tray: Winter Cole, 4s to ss: Winter Nelis, 5s to 7s; Winter Nelis, 8s double tray.

Hemp.—Manila. market easier on large output figures, and buyers holding back. Closing value J grade for June-August shipment £37 10s. Output January 1 to May 31, 751,000 bales, against 597,000 for same period last year. Stocks in Manila on May 31, 2 08,000 bales, against 159,000 at same time last year. Sisal market easier and demand has fallen off considerably. June-August shipment Tanganyika Xo. 1 now quoted £3S 10s, Xo. 2 .£37 5s sellers. Mexican: Nothing being offered. Nominal value special brush £4l; good white, £37. It is reported that production is considerably reduced. Yucatan stocks 4,000 tons, against 23,000 last year. New Zealand market quiet. Only business done is in small quantities from spot. Nominal value is easier in sympathy with others. Wool.—Bradford market quiet with general lack of confidence. New business restricted to absolute necessities. Quotations for fine quality tops halfpenny lower; prepared sorts unchanged. BUTTER AND CHEESE BOARD’S WEEKLY REVIEW The New Zealand Dairy Produce Board has received the following market report from its London office, dated June 7, prices for the previous week being given in parentheses : Butter New Zealand: Salted, 169 s to 172 s (165 s to lG7s) ; unsalted, 170 s to 172 s (165 s to 168 s) ; first whey, 160 s (1565) ; second whey, 156 s (1525). Deliveries New Zealand this week, 1,000 tons. In store,- 9,100 tons. Australian: Finest salted, 163 s to 166 s (158 s to 1625); unsalted, 164 s to 168 s (760 s to 16 4s). Argentine: Finest unsalted, 160 s to 164 s (158 s to 1625). Irish creamery: Salted, 168 s to 170 s (1625): unsalted, 172 s to 174 s (1665). Danish: F.0.b., 167 s (1575); spot, 172 s to 1174 s (162 s to 1655). Dutch: Unsalted, 166 sto 16Ss (160 s to 1645). Estonian: Salted, 162 s (15Ss to 1625) ; unsalted, 1645. Latvian: Salted, 162 s (158 s to 1625) ; unsalted, 1645. Siberian: 158 s (1545). Ukranian: 158 s (154 sto 1565). French baskets: Unsalted, 158 s to 164 s (154 s to 1645). Market quiet at the advance. Retail prices unchanged. Cheese New Zealand: White, 92s to 93s (89s to 90s) ; coloured, 94s to 95s (91s to 925). Market firm on light offering. Deliveries New Zealand this week, 18,944 crates ; in store, 136,418 crates. Canadian: White, 104 s to 110 s (104 s to 110 s) ; coloured, 104 s to 106 s (104 s to 106 s). Market quiet. Australian: -White, 89s to 91s (BSs) ; coloured, 90s to 93s (88s to 995). Market firm. Retail prices unchanged. English finest farmers’ cheese stocks decreasing : prices nominal. Estimated stocks of cheese at June 1 at London, Liverpool and Bristol, the figures for June 1, 1928, being- given in parentheses: New Zealand and Australian, 156,900 crates (106,900); Canadian, 48,300 boxes (29,800). North American Market The board has also received the following advice from its agents in Canada.: Butter: New York, 43 cents (Is 9Jd) ; Montreal, 35J cents (Is 53d).
