HILL IN DANGER
QUARRYING MENACE AT MAKETU HISTORY AND SCENERY In spite of agitation by Te Akarana Maori Association for the preservation from quarrying of historic Maketu Hill, the Government finds that it is not able to stop the destruction. ■jVTAKETU, also known as Peach Hill, is near Ramarama, and has an ancient Maori burial ground on its summit. In the early days it was in territory owned by the Ngati-Tamaoho tribe. The Minister of Lands, the Hon. G. W. Forbes, promised to consider the association’s plea for preservation in January last. His reply to the association says that he sympathises with the movement, but the Government, after inquiry into the quarrying, which is being carried out by the Franklin County Council, is not able to take further action. Mr. Forbes’s letter arrived the day after the association interviewed the Hon. W. B. Taverner, Minister of Railways, on the question, and was promised an investigation. The association will still urge that five of the 15 acres of the hill, containing the burial ground, should be made a reserve, scenic as well as historic. Settlers in the district are also anxious to s*>ve the hill, especially as the summit is already threatened with destruction.
