TRACK EVENT WINNERS RECEIVE CUPS DOWLE WINS STEEPLE The Auckland Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club held the fifth of its winter series of sports meetings at the Outer Domain on Saturday afternoon, when the usual four events, two track and two field, were staged. Following are the results: — « 75 YARDS HANDICAP First Heat J. W. Savidan. Byds I R. Willey, syds * F. L. Adams, 14yds * *Dead-heat, second. There were five starters. Won easily. Time 8 l-ssec. Second Heat R. G. Kirkwood, 71yds . . .. 1 A. Clarke, 14yds 2 C. Torbett, Byds 3 Six started. Time, Ssec. Final F. U. Adams, 14yds 1 J. \V. Savidan, Byds 2 R. Willey, syds 3 Six started. Savidan came awn»- well but Adams was on a good mark and could not be overhauled. Kirkwood flashed up to finish fourth. Won by a ’ touch. Six inches between second and third. Time, Bsec. STEEPLECHASE About 11 miles. J. Dowle, 46sec ...... 1 N. F. Cooper, *.6sec 2 C. Scown, 46sec 3 Clarke was off first fi-om the limit, and the New Zealand cross-country champion, J. W. Savidan, went from scratch. With one lap to go, R. Whitten led Clapham by three yards, with Clarke .uniting fourth. The last lap saw Dowle outstrip the field to win by 10 yards, With Cooper, who finished strongly, 10 yards away second. Scown was a sintlar distance away third. Cooper did the distance in 7min 19 sec—the fastest time. Fifteen started. Savidan, who did not over-exert himself, finished well back. PUTTING THE SHOT A. Clarke s . . . - 1 R. O. Murray, 103 ft 6in .. .. 3 At the conclusion of the meeting the president of the Auckland Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club, Mr. W. Morton, presented the winner of the steeplechase, J. Dowle, and the winner of the sprint, F. L. Adams, with miniature silver cups, as a reward for their performances.
TWO COURSE RECORDS KEEN CYCLE RACING HAYES AND CASEY THE STARS Fine weather conditions prevailed on Saturday afternoon when the Auckland Cycling Club held a race from Manger© Bridge to Papakura and back, a distance of 30 miles. A field of 17 riders faced the starter and the results were as follow: K. Mathieson (3m) l S. Hayes (scr.) 2 G. Hall (4m) 3 F. Potter (2m) 4 Time, lhr. 29m. 34 4-os. Fastest time was made by Hayes, who covered the distance in lhr. 17m 355, a record for the course. MANUKAU CLUB The Manukau Amateur Cycling Club staged two races, a senior and a junior The first attracted 40 starters and the second 12. The senior race resulted as follows: - F. Restall (3min) 1 G. Clarke (3min) j 2 H. Camp (3min) 3 G. Gardiner (3min 45sec) .... 4 F. Casey, off 30sec, gained fastest time 28min 15sec, another course record. The junior results were:— C. Hanson (2min) 1 Jv. Harris (2min) 2 W. Johnson (3min 30sec) .... 3 C. Yule gained the fastest time off scratch—32 minutes.
