THE HOME-MADE DIVAN

AND ITS COVERING \ One of the most comfortable divans :on A.lich it has been my lot to rej pose cost no more thau the price of a medium quality mattress! The ] base was an old kitchen table, cut j down so that its legs measured hut a | lew inches in height; The mattress I was placed on top, then came some ! discarded blankets and, lastly, a j Paisley shawl of family pedigree.' The use of a divan for ordinary j sleeping purposes has been much | simplified by the production of a hantl- ! stuffed, well sprung specimen, which [ has two mahogany drawers wide j enough to house a full set of bedj clothes. This device does away ! with the obviousness that spoils the effect when a spread is merely thrown over a ready-made bed. Furs worked iuto an ornamental design are being much exploited just now as covers for divans, as well as j for cushions. Such designs mean much expert knowledge of fur-work-ing, hut if you possess some old furs that are past their use for wraps you may with a little patience, work up from them a. handsome trimming for a pillow-cover or a border for a spread. A few years back we should have scorned the idea of a crocheted cover for a divan as being too hopelessly Victorian. But today’s crochet in bright wools is ’ a very different matter, and so are today’s patterns. Some of the crocheted spreads, fashioned on the lines of certain shawls and scarves and introducing hairpin work in wools or silks, are as effective and beautiful as anything that lias yet been invented for the purpose. 11.
