YACHT MASTER

AUCKLANDER QUALIFIES FOR TICKET RARE DISTINCTION For the first time in approximately 30 years a yacht master’s ticket has been granted in Auckland. The successful candidate who appeared at the recent examinations conducted by the Marine Department is Mr. Roger S. Cameron, a sub-lieutenant in the Auckland division of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. it is a purely voluntary qualification, a high standard is set by the examiners, and to those yachtsmen sailing keelers on long cruises the qualification is indeed useful. The ticket is also an inducement to yachtsmen to pursue a very interesting line of study and attain a high standard of seamanship. In the paper set for the examination, a great deal of stellar work is included. The candidate is asked to outline a day’s work, compute lati-

tude by the meridianal altitude of the sun, outline Mercator’s Sailing, find time of high water, time the amplitude of the sun, find longitude by chronometer, deviation by time azimuth, star or. the meridian, compute meridian altitude of star, compute latitude by meridian altitude of star, compute approximate altitude and bearings of ; stars out of the meridian, and com- | pute double altitude by two ex- ; meridian star 3. The candidate is also examined in chart work and the correction of ! soundings as required for a hometrade master’s ticket. Under the heading of seamanship, i questions are put relating to the management of 3*achis in moderate or stormy weather, rule of the road, signals, management of rocket appara- ! tus, international code and pilot signals, rigging of rafts and jury rudders, 1 and the preservation of the crew in | the event of wreck. j Mr. Cameron was a pupil of Mr. i J. W. R. Richmond, principal of the ; Richmond Nautical School. The qualification is not required under marine regulations, any person being at liberty to engage in ocean voyaging without a ticket of any de-. ' scriptiou - 1 A *
