TROTTING
tßy “ABAYDOS") ARACHNE’S CUP FINE RACING AT HASTINGS SECOND DAY FORM Excellent racing marked the concluding day of the Hawks', Bay Trotting Club's winter fi x . ture, which proved highly success, ful from every point of view. Th« Cup provided a spectacular contest, with a stirring finish which Arachne just topped off Polly s Picture. Great I‘arrish proved himself a real solid colt when he came from the back of the field in the Clive Handicap to win by a narrow margin from the outsider Kangahau. The two-year-old was confidently handled by j. Paul and when asked for a final effort the youngster responded with great determination. Rangahau. a five-year-old gelding by lluia Dillon—Auderettc, and owned by J. H. Lloyd, was practically the outsider of the field in the Clive Handicap. but he put up a sound performance. Young Gerrard drove a good race, and when he let the gelding go at the homo turn it looked “all over." but he could not withstand the terrific onslaught of Great I’arrish. Bon Boy, a raking big square -gaitor in V/. Lowe's care, despite a couple of mistakes in the Taradale Trot, proved good enough to get the first prize, although there was not much in it at the finish, as Audo Spray, Paradigm and Rangitero were all at the Southern horse. Paradigm broke and Kan~itero received a check which made it easier for Bon Boy. Audo Spray, after his good showing on Saturday, was allowed to start at a false price in the Taradale Handicap. He went a solid race all the way. and made no errors. The Ashhursttrained gelding never let up in the run to the box, and his supporters got a good price for second. After his fine essay on Saturday, when he went fast to get second to* Mytliorpe, it was surprising to see Peter Lloyd only second choice to Haroto for the Whakatu Handicap. The Peterwah gelding was handa-U more j'udiciously in this heat, and ing with fine dash at the righ. .| scored a popular victory. He is . , v 0 even pacer, and will be a good next season. Ilaroto went a sound race in the 12 furlongs, and J. Paul's charge had every chance, but could not keep off the determined Peter Lloyd. Always well placed, Horoto was handy at the home turn, and his backers felt confident of success 100 yards from the post, but were forced to accept second money.
Arachne justified the confidence reposed in her by winning the Cup practically from end to end. When the furlong post was reached Jack Shaw hit the front and took the shortest route for the remainder of the journey. She was asked for her best over the final furlong, but hung on well to score a very popular win. Polly’s Picture is deserving of every credit for the race she ran in the Cup. She was never close to the leaders over the first circuit, and although she moved up along the back, .was still some lengths away from Arachne at the turn. Once in line for home G. Mitchell brought her along with a great rattle, and while she made a desperate attempt to overhaul the favourite suffered a narrow defeat. Pliil Green had a turn up with Clive Dillon in the 10-furlong heat, in which a moderate field paraded. He went out quickly from the barrier, and soon opened up a big gap, running away from the field along the back. The Wanganui gelding was tiring in the straight, but hung on long enough to score a narrow victory. Bill Turner nearly landed another surprise packet in the Longlands Handicap, and had Oliver Thorpe not lost his position leaving the straight through tangling he would have won. He made a big effort to get up once straightened up for home, but failed by a short head. Wah put up a great performance to win the Tomoana Handicap, after breaking at the start, and leaving his feet twice on the journey. Bob Fisken handled the youngster with every confidence, and when it came to the final quarter the three-year-old son of Peterwah raced like a champion to win comfortably. Peter Eyre was always going solidly in the two mile trot, and with two furlongs gone Andy Bryce had him in second berth behind Audo Spray, When the latter broke on the home bend Peter had command, but could not withstand the challenge of Wah, although he kept the favourite. Deceitful, from paying a second dividend. All Red was justly entitled to pride of place in the betting for the Heretaunga Handicap, after his forward running with Polly’s Picture and Ethiopian on Saturday, and particularly as these two finished in a place in the. Cup. Young Gerrard drove the Hal Junior gelding a good race, and coming at the right end he won in splendid style. Hostess ran two good races in the principal event each day without getting a situation, and she improved in the 12-furlong heat by securing second berth, returning a good figure. The Hawera mare -was lucky, however, as had Polly’s Picture not been checked in the final dash she would have been second. Ethiopian's consistency was finally rewarded when Mr. Barton’s gelding dashed away smartly in the Farewell Handicap, and although headed along the back, came again to win in good style. The Canterbury-trained pacer was favourite, but pasd a neat price, considering the fin* form he had been showing. Gold Cast was oi.e of the few that hopped away correctly in the final event, and when the field turned out of the straight Fred Smith took the old pacer to the front. Ke kept h.s position till a furlong from home, where the favourite dashed through, to sera Gold Cast into second berth.
