RETALIATORY TARIFFS
EUROPE THREATENS ACTION AGAINST AMERICA UNITED FRONT MOOTED (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) LONDON, Friday. There seems to be a possibility that more than one European country will engage in a tariff war against the United States. A message from Paris says a congress at which 500 French chambers of commerce were represented passed a resolution protesting against America increasing protective duties, and calling on the French Government to take counter measures. The congress suggested that various European nations whose economic future is gravely menaced by the new American tariff—which is an insuperable barrier to most goods—should take united defensive action. A dispatch from Brussels says the Belgian newspapers urge a boycott of American goods, in view of the new tariff. They suggest the formation of an economic association under the auspices of the League of Nations, as a gesture of solidarity likely to impress the Washington Government. A telegram from Rome says trade newspapers in the Italian capital strongly condemn the new American tariff.
