THE PUBLIC—AND ART
Sir.— In The Sun recently I read a letter by “Vista” in which he discusses art and. art prospects in New Zealand. “Vista” suggests that, following a public referendum to decide the best picture in the annual art exhibition, the City Council should make a grant so that the chosen work might be housed in the Art Gallery as the citizen’s choice. Heaven forbid! When one thinks of the average citizen’s taste in art, judged by the wall decorations in his home—“ Stags at Bay,” “Cupid Awake” and “The Sea Hath its Pearls” (to say nothing of an occasional oleograph of her late Majesty Queen Victoria) one wonders with vague pain what the result would be of such a temerarious experiment as “Vista” has suggested. Let us have experts to choose pictures for our gallery—and the fewer experts the better. MAHLSTICK.
