TRAINING FARMERS
SPECIAL HIGH SCHOOLS WANTED A. AND P. RECOMMENDATION A suggestion for the establishment of one or more agricultural high schools in the vicinity of Auckland was presented by the educational committee at the meeting of the council of the Auckland Agricultural and Pastoral Association yesterday. Mr. J. T. F. Mitchell presided. One agricultural high school north and one south of Auckland, but not more than 20 miles from the city, were desirable, the committee suggested. The curriculum should provide lor a matriculation course and suitable agricultural education, giving a preparation for admission to such institutions as Massey Agricultural College, Lincoln College or the Ruakura Training Farm. There should also be degree courses providing for students gaining diplomas in agriculture and horticulture.
The suggestion was endorsed by the meeting and it was decided to make further efforts to urge its adoption. Mr. A. W. Wellstead, commercial agent of the Railways Department, said that a touring party of 300 Otago farmers would arrive in Auckland on June 21 and would be followed by a party of 300 Southland farmers, who would arrive in time for the Winter Show. Mr. W. F. O’Donnell, secretary to the association, outlined a programme providing for the reception and entertainment of the visitors, and a committee was appointed to finalise arrangements.
