TEACHER’S NIGHT OUT

ANNUAL DINNER HELD MINISTER ENTERTAINED Sombre thoughts of the schoolroom. the new syllabus, and the grading list, were happily banished last evening when the Auckland Headmasters’ Association held its annual dinner, Mr. F. A. Garry presiding. The guest of honour was the Hon. H. A. Atmore, Minister of Education. Others present were: Mr. W. W. Bird, chief inspector of schools; Mr. C. W. Garrard, senior inspector in the Auckland Education district; and local members of Parliament. After the dinner a smoke concert was held, at which the following toasts were honoured: —‘‘The Education Department,” ‘‘The Education Board,” “The Inspectors," and “The Members of Parliament.” In proposing the toast of “The Department,” the chairman said that the new Minister evidently intended to make a “real job” of the business of education. During the evening a number of items were given by the New Zealand Quartet.
