SIMPLE GARDENING HINTS
Michaelmas daisies should now be lifted and divided. It is a mistake to leave them longer than two years in one place. Never throw potato peelings away, bury them in the ground. The eyes will sprout and grow. At present potatoes are growing in my garden from buried peelings. When planting beans place each with the eye downwards. They will come up several days earlier than those just dropped into the ground haphazardly. When whitewashing stones, edges of pathways, etc., add oil or old dripping
to the lime and water. It will last much longer. A pretty effect can be gamed by planting a sweet pea seed with each sunflower. As the plants grow the sweet pea entwines itself about the other. Frost-bitten plants will revive if watered heavily before the sun shines upon them. To protect plants from frost a covering of newspapers is excellent and economical. Place a stone in each corner of the sheet and the papers will not he blown away by the wind. If you cut off the tops of thyme, sage and marjoram and dig wellrotted stable manure around the plants, the new growth will begin at once. Neglect these plants and there will be a crop of sticks instead of leaves.
