FILM PRIZE
COMMONWEALTH'S OFFER INSUFFICIENT FOR COMPANIES.
The £IO,UOO in prizes offered by the Commonwealth Government for films produced in Australia is not sufficient to induce either Hoyts Theatres, Ltd., or Union Theatres, Ltd., to compete, according to statements by film companies to the Sydney "Sun.” The governing director of Union Theatres, Ltd., and Australasian Films, Ltd., Mr. W. A. Gibson, declared recently that the Government should set a standard of production before awarding the prizes, otherwise the market might be flooded with cheap pictures which nobody wanted. That condition of affairs, he said, actually happened in England when the quota system began to operate. Small companies sprang up overnight. and instead of making one or two good pictures they flooded the market with inferior films. That did England a lot of harm for a long time.
Mr. Gibson added that while Australian Films, Ltd., was not producing at present, it might do so in the near future, although the Government prizes would not influence it in any way.
