DARING ESCAPE
FOREIGN LEGION EPISODE Details have reached Berlin of the j dramatic escape of a number of Germans from the French Legion while Passing on a troopship through the buez Canal. About 400 members of the Legion | were being transported from Algiers ; 'o IndoChina. Already in Algiers mere has been demonstrations owing i to the presence of a German ship, and the 20 young men concerned, some of whom had already served from two to J three years, plotted together and decided to make their escape. .They agreed to attempt this when j the ship was passing through the Suez anal, as the guards could not make Use of their weapons in the neutral tone. They jumped overboard near Ismai- '*• *>ht two were caught by the screws and received fatal injuries. The remainder reached the shore, and thence made their way to Port aid. where they were found posts on hoard various German steamers re- i taring home.
