POSTED HERSELF!

WOMAN TRAVELS AS “MAIL” In order to cross a swampy region in South Africa, transit across which was forbidden to ordinary travellers, Mrs. Charlotte Mansfield was “posted” as a letter. She described the incident in a lecture at Sir Philip Sassoon’s house in Park Lane, London, in aid of the Bird Sanctuary in the Brent Valley. Mrs. Mansfield said she was eager to continue her journey through Africa, but progress was barred by swamps caused by rains. An official told her that he could not give consent to her journey unless she agreed to be classed as "mail.” So officially Mrs. Mansfield was “posted.” and with 150 men as bearers was carried across the swamps. Mrs. Mansfield said that Zulu women wore jumpers of the same pattern as European women, except that they were made from the bark of trees and edged with beads.
