THE OAKS

LORD ASTOR S WIN PENNYCOMEQUICK CAME FAST / United P.A. — Bp Telegraph — Copyright) (United Service) Reed. 11 a.m. LONDON, Friday. The following is the result of the great three-year-old fillies’ classic, run at Epsom today: OAKS STAKES A sweepstake of £IOO each, with £2,0.00 added; li miles PENNYCOMEQUICK (Lord Astor), br f, by Hurry On—Plymstock, 9.0 .. 1 GOLDEN SILENCE (Lieut.-Colonel Giles Loader), ch f, by Swynford— Molly Desmond, 9.0 2 SISTER ANNE (Lieut.-Colonel Giles Loader), br f, by Son-in-Law— Dutch Mary, 9.0 -. 3 There were 13 starters. Won by five lengths, two lengths separating second and third horses (both these belonging to the well-known sportsman, lieuL-Colonel Giles Loader). Sister Ann had run second to Taj Mah in the One Thousand Guineas on May 3. Pennycomequick’s success would :.n a measure atone to Lord Agtor for the failure of his horse, Cragadour (the favourite) in the Derby last Wednesday. Of late years Lord Astor has had a grea; run in the Oaks, having won in 1917 with Sunny Jane, third in 1921 with Long Suit, won in 1922 with Pogrom, was first and second in 1925 with Saucy Sue and Miss Gadabout, first and third in 1926 with Short Story and Gsy Bird, and was second in 1927 with Book Law. However, in the One Thousand Guineas and the Derby Lord Astor has been a most unlucky owner. Last season. as a two-yea.r-old, Pennycomequick started only once. That was a winning effort, in the Dalham Stakes (worth £287), at Newmarket. in the autumn, starting third favourite.

The second filly in yesterday’s race. Golden Silence, scored three wins, a second and a third in seven starts, the successes being in moderately endowed events. Sister Anne was also seen out as s. two-year-old. running five times for a. win, two seconds and a third. Her win was scored in the important Champion Breeders’ Foal Plate (of £1,038), at Derby, in which she started at odds on.
