REMUERA HOCKEY
END OF FIRST ROUND TOMORROW’S PROSPECTS The first round of matches under the direction of the Auckland Hockey Association will conclude at Remuera tomorrow. Chief interest should be found in the clash between Varsity and Mount Eden, and a spirited contest is assured. If the students are successful the effect will be to put Somerville on safer ground for the championship, the position of the whites being menaced by Eden. Somerville and North Shore will stage a hard-fought exhibition, and fast, open hockey should be in evidence. Unless Somerville shows improved defensive work the marine club’s forwards will prove a dangerous combination. St. Luke’s should carry off honours in a fixture with Epiphany, on paper at least. Over confidence has been a characteristic of St. Luke’s on occasion, and the team should not take its opponent too lightly. The women’s competition will be advanced a further stage. In the senior grade Wesley will cross sticks with Somerville, and Mount Eden with Y.W.C.A. THE TEAMS Senior Grade University—Crawley. Brown, Hay, Storry, ITadcllffe, Ellison, L. H. Ramblers met Waratahs, the latter winning by one goal to nil, G. Wood finding the net after a fairly lively rally. Ramblers strove hard to score, but were jnsuccessful. Mr. C. A. Finch was referee. A much better game was witnessed at Paterangi, when the two home teams (A and B) met. Nearly all the players were keen on their game, with the result that a fast, bright display was given. E. Bell was first to score for Paterangi A and later G. Finch added a second goal. Paterangi B fought manfully, but the final whistle sounded with only one goal to their credit, scored by L. Karl.
