Soccer Knockouts
Chatham Cup-Ties Tomorrow Attractive Programme THE end of tlie first round of the senior A championship is to be followed tomorrow by a day of Chatham Cup ties, when some exciting knockout bouts are to be played. Cup ties may not provide such studied aud scientific play, but they have a thrill of their own, and the meeting between Y.M.C.A. and Thistle, and Ponsouby with Celtic at Blandford Park sounds more than promising. Elsewhere Trams play Corinthians; Belmont —Manures a ; Rangers—Northcote, and Oneliunga—Bon Accord.
In former seasons the clubs were shy of nominating for the national club trophy competition on account of the high cost of taking a team to Wellington if the club was fortunate enough to win the North Island championship. But this year the rounds following the game tomorrow will be played midweek by floodlight, and the Control Board is guaranteeing the cost of the journey to Wellington if any local club can knock out all North Island opponents to meet the South Island winners in Wellington. This generous offer has drawn a dozen entries from the senior grades, North Shore and Philomel being notable absentees. The exigencies of the service make such a competition difficult for the naval club, but several of the Shore team are very disappointed with the committee declining to nominate without consulting the players as to their wishes. The A.F.A. is fortunate in finding more support from the other clubs in the past two seasons than that coming from the senior club in the code. It is rash to prophesy in knockout games when club form is often upset, but early favourites in the competition are Tramways, Y.M.C.A. and Ponsonby in that order. The games at Blandford Park are particularly open, as Ponsonby drew with Celtic only last week, and the week before Y.M. beat Thistle by the odd goal in a dour struggle. Bon Accord may surprise Onehunga, and Belmont is lucky to hold a ground advantage in meeting Manurewa at Devonport. Rangers and Northeote at Onehunga is very open after last week’s close finish between them. THE TEAMS Senior A Grade Belmont—Wylie, R. Bach, Kemp, Lithgow, Woodall, N. JUNIOR NOTES Secondary School Soccer: The exciting display of clever Soccer given by the secondary school students on King’s Birthday in the curtain-raiser between Mount Albert Grammar and Technical College, came as a revelation to the large crowd, many of whom were unaware of the progress of the in the college competitions, in which 17 teams are now engaged. Thanks to the indefatigable efforts of Mr. R. M. Beswick, with the staunch support of Mr. Claude Downes, the pupils from the Plunket nursery of the code are now well catered for when they pass on to the secondary schools, and a senior University club will soon be in sight, with old boys’ organisations following suit. A Dominion Tourney: Again, thanks to the enthusiasm of the secondary schools organisers, arrangements are now being finalised for the first Dominion tournament between secondary school teams throughout both islands being played in Auckland during the August vacation. The controlling authorities in Wellington were lukewarm. as usual, when the suggestion was put forward by Auckland, and have now agreed to the work of organising the tourney being done from here. Auckland is the only centre which conducts a competition confined to secondary schools, but in other centres there are some good school teams playing in the junior grades, and a comparison of their form with that of the Auckland colleges will be full of interest. s* * * Schoolboy Visit to Australia: After the visit of the Aussie primary schoolboys to New Zealand, a return trip from a team of New Zealand boys was promised, but the proposed visit still hangs fire. Mr. Rupert Harrison, the enthusiastic head of the Belmont School, has received sufficient support to make the visit practicable, but the controlling body at the capital is still hesitant, and it is very disappointing to find so commendable a scheme in danger of being shelved owing to the apathy of the higher authorities. Second Grade Championship: The second grade championship is in a very open stage, with Shore and Ponsonby A at the top of the ladder and undefeated. The meeting between the two teams tomorrow should provide a desperate tussle for the top rung. Both clubs fielded very strong sides at the start of the season, but casualties and ’flu in the senior clubs have made a big demand on the junior elevens and upset some of their combination. Ponsonby A has very promising colts in Lock and Green at fullback, Masters at half, with Forman and Saunders in the forward line, some of them having shaped well in the seniors, while the veteran Porter still battles cheerfully among the colts. Ponsonby B is also close up with the leaders and may yet realise the ambition to lower the A’s colours. Wilford in goal, Stewart at centre-half, and Penny at forward, are all nearing senior standard, and “Gunner” Moir adds the weight of his battling experience #o a promising young side. Shore Colts have good exponents in Goldsworthy and "Whiteley, but some of the best players are no longer eligible, on account of having reached full seniority, but the third intermediate team has some good young players to draw on, and the championship prospects of the team are still very bright.
