PENALTY OF £l()b FOR BOOKMAKER “MAKING A FOOL OF LAW” Having been fined £IOO for a similar offence only a month ago, Butler Bennett was again charged at the Police Court this morning with keeping a common gaminghouse. He was fined £IOO, and Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., remarked that the man was making a fool of the law. Bennett, whose age was given as 50, pleaded guilty to keeping premises known as 25 Swanson Chambers, Swanson Street, as a common gaminghouse. James Dryland, aged 30, admitted assisting in the management of the establishment. Detective-Sergeant Doyle, who, with Detective O’Sullivan, arrested the two accused, gave it as his opinion that Bennett was in a fairly big way. There was a considerable amount of betting material found on the premises. “Bennett was fined £IOO a month ago for a similar offence in regard to the same chambers,” remarked the detective-sergeant. “His assistant was also charged and fined £10.” “He was here a month ago and I fined him the limit then,” observed the magistrate. “However, he has pleaded guilty ” Dryland was fined £25. TWO MORE OFFENDERS Two more bookmakers appeared before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the afternoon and paid the penalty of “laying tho odds” by fines of £IOO and £25 respectively. The offenders were James Edward Burtenshaw (28) and Keith Wynyard Raynes (21), who were charged with “laying the odds” on June 5. They were arrested by Detective-Sergeant McHugh. Burtenshaw had £7B 16s 3d in his possession when arrested and Raynes had 16s BJd. Mr. F. K. Hunt fined the first-named £IOO and Raynes was ordered to pay £25 into the State coffers. At the Hastings Magistrate’s Court, Douglas Gordon George Murray, who pleaded guilty to a charge of carrying on the occupation of a bookmaker, was fined £25.
