NEW CITY BLOCK
BUILDING PLANNED FOR VULCAN LANE OFFICES AND SHOPS A new building of three storeys, and capable of being extended ultimately to seven, is to be erected shortly on the corner of Vulcan Lane and High Street for Mr. A, E. Gifford, tailor, the present owner of the block. The new block will have a 60ft. frontage to Vulcan Lane and, in High Street, will occupy the site at present occupied by Mr. F. D. McLiver’s offices, and the premises of Mr. A. E. Gifford. The buildings at present on the site are to be demolished, and the new building, which is to be of brick and reinforced concrete, will be set back 16 feet to the new alignment of Vulcan Lane. It is understood that the ground floor will be occupied by four shops, three of which will have entrances in Vulcan Lane, and the other on the corner of High Street and Vulcan Lane. The other two floors will be occupied by offices. The latest type of electric lift is to be installed to serve the building, which has been planned on attractive lines. Tenders for the construction work aro to close on June 14, and it is hoped that the building will be completed by the end of the year. The shop fronts will be in marble, and the joinery in Tasmanian blackwood. Plans for the structure have been prepared by Messrs. Grierson, Aimer and Draffin. The building will be known as Gifford’s Building.
