FLYING THE TASMAN

AIRWOMAN REFUSES OFFER SOUTH AFRICAN TRIP

The Auckland airwoman, Mrs. Gladys Sandford, has refused the offer of an Australian syndicate to finance her on a solo flight across the Tasman.

MRS. SANDFORD returned to Aucki land last evening by the Marama, after spending the last 15 months in Australia. “I was sorry I had to turn the flight down,” she said, “but I was not feeling at all fit, and the doctors would not give me permission to undertake tha journey.” The syndicate offered to finance her and provide a plane. Mrs. Sandford said that she will undertake some flying “stunt” before long, but she was not prepared to say what it would be. She has been offered a private flying appointment in South Africa, and will leave shortly to take it up. There is a possibility that she will fly from the Cape to Cairo.
