BEEF SLIGHTLY EASIER WESTFIELD STOCK SALE WESTFIELD. 2.30 p.m. Beef met with a slightly easier market at the Westfield fat stock sale this morning. The attendance of butchers was affected by the Ellerslie rpce meeting. Best ox made up to 38s; best cow and heifer beef to 34s a hundred. Waikato graziers were responsible for the biggest percentage of an offering of approximately 460 head of steers. Several lines of well-finished cattle also came forward on account of Northern and Bay of Plenty vendors. The quality was mixed. While there was a bigger percentage than usual of heavy prime well-finished bullocks, many lines required considerably more finish, and an appreciable percentage of the offering was below the standard set at recent sales. An indication of this can be taken from the fact that unfinished small steers made as low as £5 10s. The quality of a certain “section of the yarding indicated, in fact, that certain graziers, short of feed, had decided to cut down stocks, irrespective of condition.

A feature of the yarding, was the big percentage of choice quality JP.A. steers forward. A line of 82 medium-framed, but very well-finished solid prime young P.A. steers on account of the estate of the late Alexander Bell, Pokeno, met with keen competition at up to £ls for a line which went to Bridges and Overington, Wellesley Street. One of the best quality lines of heavy weight cattle of the day came forward on account of B. Reed, Waerenga, to make up to £l6 for a line which went to H. E. Swaffield, Otahuhu. Big framed heavy prime steers qn account of a Te Awamutu grazier, sold singly, made up to £l6 ss, and averaged £l6 6s 2d. T. Baster, Ponsonby, was the buyer of the top-priced beast. Mr. T. Ricketts was the vendor. One beast in a line of seven on account of C. Cameron, Morrinsville, sold to Cooper and Parkes, Parnell, also made £l6 15s. Eight well-finished steers on account A. Lindquist, Paparoa. made to £ls. Twenty-four medium-framed wellfinished steers on acqpunt of Mrs. Main, Hdutapu, made to £ls ss. Twenty-seven mediEim to heavy weight cattle on account U. E. R. L. ■Wily, Mauku, made up to £l6 7s 6d, and averaged £ls. For the fifth week in succession the same Waikato vendor 'topped the market with exceptionally heavy prime fiigframed* steers, which made to £l6 17s 6d. Heslop and Co., Onehunga, were the buyers of the top-priced pen. A yarding of approximately 250 head of cows and heifers was drawn largely from the dairy herds of the province. Choice quality lines were hard to locate. One truck of exceptionally choice prime young cows on account of Mr. James Taylor, Cambridge, topped the market in this section. One pen went to J. Rowe, Newmarket, for £l2. 17s 6d. The market generally was easier. A short yarding of calves met with very keen competition, prices showing a siight advance on late rates. Heavy runners made up to £S 16s, one choice prime heif€‘r sold on account of Mr. C. W. Land on to J. Rowe, Newmarket, at this price. Heavy vealers made to £5 16s. Slightly under an average yarding of fat sheep was .made up largely of big-framed heavy prime wethers. A start was not made in this section until after 2.30 o'clock.
