“PLUCKED AT LAST”
GAME OF CHANCE AT SHOW “THE FOWL” TO BE CAGED (From Our Own Correspondent) HAMILTON, Today. Plucked at last, Frank FitzWilliams, alias “The Fowl,’’ aged 38, appeared in court this morning charged with being a rogue and a vagabond, in that he played a game of chance at the Winter Show. He pleaded not guilty. Detective White said at 10 o'clock last evening he saw accused playing a game at the show in which a canvas board inscribed with figures and racehorses was used. Money was staked ou each number, and a dart was then thrown by accused, the money being paid on the winning number. Accused said he had £S when he started and finished with £2 13s. Mr. Wyvern Wilson, S.M., said he was satisfied that a game of chance was played. Had the patrons been permitted to use the dart themselves the element of skill might have prevailed. As it was the chance of those playing was defeated by a haphazard method.
Detective White said accused was a well-known character at shows. He had a long list of convictions ranging from theft to being idle and disorderly. Sentence of one month’s imprisonment was imposed.
