CLAIMS OVERLOOKED

DOMINION REPRESENTATIVE METEOROLOGICAL CONFERENCE (Fro?*. Our Resident Reporter) WELLINGTON, Today. Scientific circles in Wellington are intrigued over the attitude adopted by the Government in regard to New Zealand’s representation at the World Meteorological Conference. As already announced Mr. D. C. Bates, ex-Direc-tor of Meteorology, was appointed, the claims of Dr. Kidson, present Director being overlooked. 'As a result some concern was felt by members of the Scientific Research Council who, it is understood, had urged that Dr. Kidson should be sent. The Minister in charge, the Flon. H. Atmore, stuck to his guns, however, and Mr. Bates is now on his way Home. It is stated that Mr. Bates has left New Zealand a month earlier than was necessary, and it is stated the Minister sent him away earlier in order to prevent further pressure being brought to bear upon him to alter his decision.

The dispute will not be allowed to rest where it is, however, as it is understood that certain members of Parliament are taking it up, and good deal is likely to be heard on the subject when Parliament meets. The Government’s attitude is likely to be challenged strongly in the House.
