IDEAL CLASSROOMS
FRESH AIR AND SUNSHINE AT AVONDALE PLANS FOR BUILDING Side walls of glass will be the outstanding feature of the new open-air classroom to be built at the Avondale South School. The building will be 24 feet by 22 feet, and capable of accommodating 40 to 50 children. The two sides will be composed entirely of windows, from a height of four feet above the ground. A mackboard will be provided on one end wall, with windows above, but no decision has yet been made concerning the type of construction of the opposite end. Either sliding doors, opening in sunny weather, or the latest type with two doors and windows intervening will be adopted. An open wooden porch will give access to the classroom. The building will be 12ft Gin in height and have a “hipped” roof. The classroom will be the Auckland Education Board’s first experiment with the truly “open-air” type, similar to those in existence in Canterbury. A start on construction of the building, hpwever, is being delayed by the board’s difficulty in obtaining possession of the site, adjoining the school ground, on a portion of a City Council. recreation reserve overlooking the harbour. The board is negotiating with the council for an exchange of properties, but it now appears that authorising legislation will have to be enacted before the deal can be completed. The site was inspected on Saturday by members ol: the Auckland branch of the “Open-air Schools League,” with whom the board is co-operating in the project.
