BADMINTON TOURNEY

FAST PLAY AT MANGERE MEN’S EVENTS ADVANCED In the Northern Badminton tournament begun at Manger© yesterday, most of the day was devoted to men’s events, which in singles and doubles were advanced to the finals. These will be played later, between T. Kelly (Parnell) and E. Dart (Mangere) in the singles, and Kelly and J. G. McLean (Parnell) and Dart and C. Ellett (Mangere) in the doubles. A start was made with combined events, which will be continued along with women’s singles and doubles during the week. The early rounds of the singles brought to light promising Mangere players in Kissling and I. Eilett. In the second round Kissling fully extended J. Southon (Parnell). He appealed to have the second set clinched when, by missing a “sitter” at the net, ho allowed Southon to overhaul him and win an exciting game by a singl«> point. Southon went on to meet Dart, and only the latter’s greater accuracy and range of strokes permitted him to come through a hot second set, in which Southon kept level with him for a time. In the other semi-final Kelly and C. Ellett put on the best Badminton of 1 the day in the first set, in which Ellett ran to a comfortable lead at 10 — 2, only for Kelly to overhaul him at 12 all, after which every point was contested to 17 all. After a fine rally Kelly obtained the odd point. In the second set : he kept Ellett on the move and. tho latter going off in his overhead work, i won comfortably at 15—3. In the men’s doubles the only three- ; set matf'h of the day was staged by and Tonks-McFar--1 lane. Tonka and McFarlane showed [great tenacity and defence to pick up the second set from a bad position. In the third were again down, but recovered well to 12 all, whence Langguth drew' away on service. C. F. Jones and K. H. Wilson showed fine defence against a severe attack in their match with C. Ellett and Dart, while good positional play was seen when Kelly and McLean beat Southon and Rish.worth in the second round.
