WINNER AT ADDINGTON LADY fan at a price Press Associatioti CHRISTCHURCH, Monday, rh. Canterbury Park trots concluded , dull weather, the track ‘ nne l, mod order. The totallsator an increase ot £3,112 on the "“ Progressive Handicap liken Wood took command with half • Tie to go, and although Quickhre 1 Jhave beaten her had he not near the post the win was full merit Peter Lin, who broke twice "I , h 6 Journey, was two lengths away id, a neck in front of Quickhre. • was verv unfortunate that Quicker* broke as he had the measure of vileen Wood when the mistake occurred. Koro Peter trotted a fine race nto fourth place, and of the others St Petros and Tot Logan did best. Harewood Handicap Delightful scored a very easy win in the Harewood Handicap, playing \rith Sir Author when the pair came •oirether in the home stretch. The liter had to make all hi 3 running on the outside, which took a lot out of aim before the straight was reached. The third horse. Rap, was three lengths away, the remainder being well strung out. Paparua Handicap Necks and heads separated the first four horses to cross the line in the Paparua Handicap. The finish was une of the finest ever seen on the course. Before the straight was reached Linkman had settled Travis Axworthy, but his task was by no means completed. Trimmer, Harvest Child and Dundas Boy went after the leader, gradually wearing him down. Dundas Boy was well placed iown the back the last time and when Trimmer went after Linkman, Berry brought Dundas Boy along with a ueat rattle to well-timed victory. Trimmer stripped a greatly-improved •torse today and in outstaying Linkman indicated that lie should win a good two-mile race this winter. Harvest Child was never far away from the leaders, and tho fact that a length would have covered the first four horses gives some idea of the merit cf his effort. Athlone, Harold Thorpe and Logan Chief were all close up. Maturity Handicap A good-looking bunch of three-year-olds went to the post for the Maturity Handicap. J. Bryce’s pair, Alexis and Olatrice, were made a very hot favourite. At the half-mile peg Wild went after Brent Light and Aelp commenced a fast run from the ° ack * Once into the straight it looked J* though Kelp would catch Wild 3ingen. but J. Walsh had his charge r?a dy for a good finish and went on to UII J comfortably by three-quarters of , length, with Brent Light three ■“ogths away. Next to finish were 'iy Denver, Cushla Doro and Alexis. Arachne’s Hawke's Bay Cup Win
GREAT PARRISH AGAIN (Special to THE SUN) HASTINGS, Monday. The Hawke’s Bay Trotting Club’s winter carnival concluded today in ideal weather, and despite big football and hockey attractions at Napier there was a large attendance, while the track was in excellent order. After the Tomoana Trot the stewards hr,ld an inquiry into Wall’s form compared with her showing in the Taradale Handicap, and owner Fisken’s explanation was accepted. The Cup produced a stirring finish between Aracline and Polly’s Picture, the former just securing the \*erdict. The cup wa§ afterwards presented to Mrs. Sweetapple. and J. Shaw was the recipient of a gold-mounted whip. The machine handled £17,914 for the two days. Clive Handicap After his good showing on Saturday Great Parrish was made a better favourite than Baron Derby for the Clive Handicap and, excellently driven by J. Paul, the colt put up a sterling performance to win by a head. Oliver Thorpe and Baron Derby led most of the journey, with Rangihau and Huia Maid always handy. At the home turn these four were well bunched. Laurier and Great Parrisn being next. At the distance Rangihau shot away, looking a winner till Great Parrish came with a determined effort and snatching a narrow victory. Baron Derby was four lengths away, third, followed by Lady Yvonne (who was slow to go away), Oliver Thorpe and Huia Maid. Taradale Handicap Bessie Bingen began well and turning into the straight was just behind the pilot. Paradigm and Bon Boy. but the mare left her feet, losing a lot of ground, and although she went a good race could not get to the leaders afterwards. Bon Boy hit the front passing the stands and held a slight lead entering the straight from Audo Spray and Brian Bingen (who broke). Paradigm. Rangitero and Bessie Bingen. A great race to the post saw Bon Boy falter, but recovering got home by half a length from Audo Spray. Paradigm was a neck away, third, I-angitoro fourth and Bessie Bingen and King Peter next. Wall did not begin correctly and was never sighted on the joutnej. whakatu Handicap
liaroto was again made favourite, but suffered defeat at the hands of Peter Lloyd, who was second choice. Miss Lcda went out quickly, while Lady Author lost a lot of ground. Along tho back Huia Maid, well out. was close to the leaders, and crossing the top dashed to the lead, only to stop badly 100 yards from home. Peter Lloyd. Haroto and El DuMt were handy at the home turn, but the last named soon compounded and tne two favourites fought out the issue, Peter Lloyd having too much speed for the Mangere pacer. Mald was four lengths away third, vvitn Ladv Author. Tawa King, Lightfoot and'El Direct next. The Cup
Aracline was soon in front, and the Logan Pointer mare was never headed. To Wahia. Gang Awa, Ethiopian and Hostess were always handy in a bunched field, Polly's Picture bein. ahead of the next division, and bleat Delight showing up well on the outside. Aracline held a slight advantage from Gang Awa, Ethiopian. Te Wahia, Polly's Picture and Great Delight at the home turn, and in a desperate finish Shaw's mare hung on to beat the game Polly s Pictu.e by a Short head. A length hack came Ethiopian, followed at intervals by 1 e
Wahia, Belle Dial (who left badly). Gang Awa and Hilltop. Longlands Handicap There was a poor field in the Longlands Handicap, and Clive Dillon won by a head from Oliver Thorpe, both pacers being at a good price. Green took Clive Dillon to the front, opening up a big gap along the back, but crossing the top Fliton, Oliver Thorpe and Lady Yvonne closed up. Clive Dillon led into the straight front Oliver Thorpe, while Fliton, a warm favourite. was getting the stitch. Oliver Thorpe issued a t—allenge to the j leader, but in a despexate finish Clive \ Dillon won by a head. Lady Yvonne ■ was two lengths away third, followed \ by Trumpeter and Fliton. Tomoana Handicap Deceitful was elected favourite over Bingen Spiers and Wah for the Tomoana Handicap, but although she went a good race third was the best she could do. Audo Spray was the pacemaker for the greater part of the journey, being trailed by Peter Eyre. Passing the stand Deceitful moved up with Wah, while Bingen Spiers (who began badly) was making up ground in good style. The favourite improved her position along the back, but crossing the top left her feet, and at the turn Audo Spray went to a break. This , left Peter Eyre in the lead, but Wah came fast in the run home to win by | two lengths, with Deceitful, who came ; fast again, a length away third. Audo Spray and Bingen Spiers were next. Heretaunga Handicap All Red was always well placed, never being further back than fourth at any stage, and won by a length from Hostess, who put up a fine run. Polly’s Picture was unlucky, being well back three furlongs from home, but in the straight made a great efEort, and was a neck away third. Vanity Boy, who was the leader most of the way, was fourth. My Thorpe, who got a bad passage in the run home, was next. Farewetl Handicap There was a great pool for the Farewell Handicap. The race was run in semi-darkness, the, start being delayed through Enawah playing up. Ethiopian hopped to the front from Gold Cast, Nathaniel, Queen Elizabeth and Enawah. Along the back Gold Cast took the lead and was still in the van when heads were turned for home, Ethiopian, Enawah and Queen Elizabeth being in attendance. When straightened up Ethiopian went to the front to win nicely from Gold Cast, with Enawah third, and High Sea next. Derby Lynn, Karma, Lady Jewel, Denver Hinds and Benefice were badly left.
