NARROW ESCAPES
A N ugly smash occurred right in front of the stands at Ellerslie yesterday, about half a furlong from the winning post. This was in the King George Handicap, and the horse was Merry Mint. He was endeavouring to find an opening, running immediately behind the line of leading horses. —— ■ that Merry Mint got on to the heels of a horse in front and fell, both horse and jockey, E. A. Keesing, bei n g bowled along the ground at the feet of the horses charging from behind. Fortunately no other competitors fell. Keesing was badly knocked about, receiving severe internal injuries, and he was immediately ordered to hospital. At latest advices his condition was not serious. Mr. J. Smith received a fractured arm when he was thrown off Wedding March in the Great Northern Steeplechase.
