SCHOOL DENTISTRY

PROPOSAL TO EXTEND SERVICE MINISTER’S DEFINITE VIEW A definite stand is being adopted by the Minister of Education, the Hon. H. Atmore, on the subject of the extension of State dental clinics to private schools. As one of the instigators of the proposal to extend the service, Mr. Atmore is not willing to see the scheme confined to the State schools. The Minister has made his attitude plain as the result of a communication from the Loyal Orange Lodge annual conference, held recently, which stated that the conference affirmed the principle of State education as carried out at present, and objected to any extension of privileges to private schools. The Minister has replied that the letter is receiving consideration, but that if the conference could not approve of the extension of the dental clinic system to ' denominational schools he was not in accord with this point of view. It was not reasonable to expect the parents of children attending other schools than State ones to be debarred from State privileges. They were taxpayers, and it was unfair that they should not have any advantages from the expenditure of the money which they paid out in taxes every year.
