A METEORIC RISE
\V HEN the Ru 9fc>y season started this year, Auckland possessed three threequarter backs who had previously been selected to - All Black honours, via., Lucas L. Hook, and Minns. . With another trio of the calibre of Goodwin, R. Hock, and Falwasser in the offing, it looked to be a hopeless task for any newcomer to expect to gain representative honours in the threequarter line. It is difficult to say how Abbott, the Training College winger, would have fared had L. Hook and Falwasser been considered for one of the two wing positions in the Auckland team to meet Waikato, but the fact remains that it was a wonderful p* formance on the part of the exWhangarei High School player to achieve representative honours so soon, in view of the wealth of talent offering. Auckland Rugby is no respecter of mere reputations, and apart from having an off day once or twice, Abbott's selection was well deserved in the light of the brilliant form he has shown to date. His phenomenal rise from comparative obscurity to representative honours has undoubtedly been the outstanding individual feature of the season to date.
