UNLUCKY MASCOT
LABOURER’S WHIM COSTS FOURTEEN DAYS THEFT FROM MOTOR-CAR The attractions of a winged motor mascot were too much for Robert Roy on Saturday evening, so he removed it from a motorcar radiator and silently stole away. Unfortunately for Roy the car was parked outside the Majestic Theatre, and the uniformed attendant had been keeping an interested eye on him from the time he had first manifested any interest in that side of the street. Roy, a labourer, aged 37, pleaded guilty at the Police Court this morning to stealing a motor mascot valued at 27s 6d, and belonging to Christopher John Ellis. “One of these contemptible thefts,” was how Sub-Inspector McCarthy described Roy’s action. The police did not know much of the man. He had been noticed on Saturday evening by the Majestic Theatre attendant prowling about among the cars parked in Lome Street. “Roy had slipped the mascot in his pocket and was getting away down the street when he was caught,” added cue sub-inspector. The Court Orderly: He says he lives in Grey Avenue. Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M.: He will live on Mount Eden for 14 days. Sentence was passed accordingly.
