GOOD RUN AT HASTINGS MY THORPES SUCCESS (Special to THE SUN) HASTINGS, Today. The weather was fine and the attendance good for the opening day of the Hawke’s Bay Trotting Club’s winter meeting today. The track was holding. Results: NOVICE HANDICAP Of £100; li miles; 3.45 limit. I—GREAT PARRISH (J. Paul), limit .. 1 6 HUIA MAID, limit 2 7 BARON DERBY, limit 3 Scratched: Liability. Won by a length, three lengths between second and third. Time, 3.42 3-5. Great Parrish went away steadily In the Novice Handicap, and, after being well placed for a mile, moved up behind the leader, Huia Maid, at the entrance to the straight. Mr. Paul's colt was handy, and, finishing well, won nicely from Huia Maid, who went a good race. Baron Derby, the Green three-year-old by Nelson Derby, made a promising showing into third place, with Lady Yvonne, who was badly placed in the early stage,s close up fourth. HAVELOCK HANDICAP (Trotters) Of £120; 15 miles; 3.50 limit. 1— DECEITFUL (W. Lowe), limit .. .1 5 RANGITERO, 12yds 2 6 PARADIGM, 12yds 3 Scratched: Bon Boy, Nebraska. Won by two lengths, two lengths between second and third. Time, 3.42 1-5. Deceitful, favourite in the Havelock Handicap, broke up at the start, but soon steadied, and, with half a mile gone, Lowe took the mare to the front, to win in an easy fashion. Rengitero and Paradigm were always handy, to finish second and third. Bessie Bingen was slow away, but finished fourth, while Wah also shaped well. NAPIER HANDICAP Of £120; lj miles; 3.40 limit 2 BENEFICE (J. Shaw), 24yd* .. 1 3 GANG AW A’. 36yds 2 1 — HAROTO, 12yds 3 Scr.: Fliton, Musical. Won by a length, six lengths between second and third. Time, 3.40. Benefice won the Napier Handicap in fine style, after being nicely placed all the Huia Maid went to the front and at the half mile post, Tawa King, Rodie and Benefice were following in a bunch. Huia Maid was first into the straight with Benefice, Vanity Boy, Louie Dillon and Gang Awa’ fallowing. Benefice took the lead and, stalling off a challenge by Gang Awa, won by a length with the favourite, Haroto, six lengths away, followed by Huia Maid and Tawa King. EAST COAST HANDICAP Of £200; 1 mile and 5 furlongs; 3.54 limit. 2 POLLY’S PICTURE (G. Mitchell), 12yds 1 I—ETHIOPIAN, limit 2 S—ALL RED, limit 3 Scr.: Speculator, Dealer, hTative Hero. Won by a neck, three lengths between second and third. Time, 3.54 3-5. A hot favourite, Ethiopian, attempted to win the East Coast Handicap from end to end, but was beaten after a desperate finish by Polly’s Picture, who was capably handled by G. Mitchell. All Red was never further back than third, but could do no better at the finish. Electric Gold was in close attendance to Ethiopian for 11 furlongs, but faded out in the run home. Te Wahia, who was in the bunch down the back, came up fast to finish just behind All Red, with Hostess, Electric Gold and Great Delight next. HASTINGS HANDICAP Of £120; 11 miles; 3.5 limit. 1— MY THORPE (J. Paul), limit .. 1 2 PETER LLOYD, limit 2 S—FLITON,5 —FLITON, 4Syds 3 Scratched.—Zol Moor, Camui, Miss Leda, Lightfoot, Vallamont, Loehbank. Won by eight lengths. Time, 2.59 4-5.
