CUSTOMS INCREASE
SMALLER MARGIN FOR MAY REVENUE MORE FROM PETROL TAX Customs duty for the port of Auckland for the month of May amounted to £162,170, representing an increase of £3,822, compared with May of last year, whereas the increase in April was £62,044. For the first five months of this year Customs duty and tyre tax totalled £944,093. compared with £861,485 for the similar period of 1928, and £917,321 in 1927, Details are as follow:
The increase in the revenue derived from the motor-spirit taxation is over £30,000 for th€> five months, compared with 1928, when the tax was introduced. The figures for May show an increase of £3,927. The tax this year has already produced £121,166, compared with £90.417 in the same period of last year. Following is a comparison of the returns:
The tyre tax for the past five months amounted to £19,630, compared with £22,146 in the corresponding period of 1928. The respective figures for May in 1929 and 1928 were £2,226 and £3,465. Beer duty augmented the Customs revenue during the past month by £B,BIO, compared with £11,337 in May of last year, and £10,023 in the same month of 1927.
