Conservative Debacle

LOSS OF OVER 160 SEATS Labour Misses Clear Majority BALANCE OF POWER WITH LIBERALS SO far, with only 23 returns to come, the outstanding feature of the British election is the severe defeat of the Conservatives who lost over 160 seats. The Labour Party failed to secure a clear majority, but is far enough in the lead to form the next Ministry. Again, as in 1923, the Liberals bold the balance of power. Mr. Lloyd George says they will use it in no haggling spirit.

Commenting on the results the Rt. Hon. J. Ramsay MacDonald, Leader of the Opposition, said these were magnificent, indicating that the Government had lost the confidence of the people. Changes in representation were made in the following seats: The Wrekin, Miss Picton Turbevill (Labour), a gain from the Conservatives. Her majority was 2,862. Hull East was won from the Conservatives by the Labour candidate, Mr. Muff, with a majority of 6,213. Following are the detailed returns: BATLEY AND MORLEY Ben Turner (Lab.) 24,621 W.
