SAVING HOBSON BAY
OBJECTIONS TO USE AS RAILWAY YARDS TOWN PLANNING PROTEST The proposal of the Railway Department to reclaim an area in Hobson Bay, to be used for marshalling yards, has been considered carefully by the Town Planning Association. The association has reached The conclusion that for the proper utilisation of Orakei Basin a channel connecting with the basin must always be kept open. Also, it is considered that the portion of Hobson Bay enclosed by the railway embankment cannot be left in its present condition. The bay could be made extremely attractive. Lastly, the association contends that if railway marshalling yards were placed in the vicinity of Point Resolution, there would bte a considerable depreciation in the value of residential property abutting on that area. The association has therefore suggested that the Railway Department’s proposal should be resisted until such time as a joint committee, consisting of representatives of the Railway Department and Auckland citizens, has had an opportunity of examining every phase of the department’s scheme and all possible economic alternatives.
