WANGANUI RIVER SERVICE

PROBABLE FREIGHT REDUCTION (Prom Our Oxen Correspondent) - TAUMAKUNUI, Friday. It is reported from Wanganui that very important negotiations are proceeding between the Wanganui River Trust and River Services, Ltd., which company maintains the river-borne transx>ort. #• It has been authoritatively announced that \Mr. R. Ha trick, manager of the company, has stated that if the trust is prepared. to make a reduction in river dues River Services, Ltd., will reduce freights, by approximately 20 per cent. The trust has considered the matter, and has given its Finance and Works Committee authority to investigate the position, with power to act. The result is a foregone conclusion that the suggestion from the transporting company will be met in a genial spirit. The river dues collected by the trust amount to about. £2OO a year, and have always been regarded as a vexatious charge. A suggestion has been advanced that if the dues are abolished the River Services might agree to carry the trust’s men and materials free, in return. This would also give power to carry out the freight reductions. Settlers all along the length of the Wanganui will benefit considerably, especially in the reduced -charges for conveyance of fertilisers.
